Review: PumpEase Hands Free Pumping Support

August 10, 2011 1 Comment

We were all very excited to get the PumpEase Hands Free Pumping Support for review! This is a product we had heard a lot about and as many of our mama’s had given birth recently or were about to give birth, they were all excited to test it out!

Now I could spout off a million reasons why you should breastfeed, why you should feed your baby breastmilk, so on and so forth, but this isn’t that kind of article. This is how to help make all of those important choices even easier… with PumpEase! A hands free breast pump support that makes you feel good and gives you two free hands while pumping.

The PumpEase we received is from their organic line and is very softly textured and attractive. The fabric is “unbleached and undyed knit fabric that was custom milled just for us from 90% certified organic cotton and 10% spandex” Wow! Very nice! We were impressed.

The PumpEase made it’s first round with myself, the Director of My Family and Me, as most of the products do (it’s a perk of being the boss!) and right away I was impressed. I am not currently a nursing mother, but have been, of course, and I remember very well the days of pump-pump-pumping away while holding two horns to my chest wishing there was a better way (exactly what the creator Wendy used to think!). I also remember in the hospital, at the lactation office, seeing this really ugly bra thing with crazy straps and clips to attach your pump. No way was I going there. I may have completely forgotten why it was important to keep myself “done up” while I was home with my newborn, but I knew that was not going help me feel good or attractive, no sir. The PumpEase is completely different story. It’s simple, sleek, and modern. No straps, clips, sliders, or “harnesses”, just a simple one piece option that hooks like a bra but feels even better and fits any pump. I was sold.

The creator of the PumpEase, Wendy Armbruster Bell, had very similar thoughts to mine, and I’m sure similar to just about every mom who has gone through the “Holy cow how long is this going to take?” pumping experience. That is how and why the PumpEase was created. Wendy wanted to have another option aside from the seeming torture devices and other contraptions. She wanted comfort, ease… and that’s what she created.

After I had my fun with the PumpEase, the next tester was Aimee: mother of two, with the newest addition little Isaac a new nursing pro. Aimee used a Playtex pump (pictured above) and had no problems with seamless opening of the PumpEase accommodating the pump. Aimee was able to pump hands free without a problem and saw easily how useful this could be, especially for someone who is pumping regularly and/or frequently. Aimee also thought the comfort was great and the PumpEase could even be worn all day while at work to make pumping quick and easy.

Our other testers agreed with Aimee also, the PumpEase allows for comfort and ease, especially with regular and frequent pumping. Bonus points for the PumpEase!

Our only complaints: one tester tried to nurse in the PumpEase on one side while pumping the other, or just leaving it on to nurse in-between pumpings, no go. She had trouble with the openings not being quite open enough to accommodate the nursing. I’m not sure if it’s possible or how, but an addition to accommodate nursing while wearing a PumpEase might be worth looking into. Of course I could also see how larger openings may cause trouble with how well it can hold some pumps, in which case that defeats the purpose. But IF it COULD be done…
The only other issue that was mentioned was the hook and eye closure. This is the same type of closure you will find on most bras, and also allows for some great adjust-ability. Because the PumpEase comes in sizes S-M-L-XL (though they are able to work with just about anyone to get them the right size) having the ability to adjust yours an inch or two is very nice. Nursing mamas know how much their boobage (is that a word?) can change during the course of a baby’s nursing career (a lot!) This closure does not wear out as quickly as Velcro, and can not rust, get stuck, or hurt your skin like a zipper, so there is good reason for it being there. However, our mamas with a swifter letdown had a bit of trouble getting all of the hooks hooked before the letdown. Perhaps making a snap or other option available for those who prefer it? Kind of like the cloth diaper mamas who love snaps, and others who love Velcro, it’s a personal preference that if accommodated would be appreciated.

What else is there to love about the PumpEase?

THE COLORS AND PATTERNS!

Beauty while breastfeeding/pumping is making a huge statement right now, and PumpEase is right there at the helm! With designs and colors such as “Tuxedo” and “BelAir Blue” there is something for every mama. There is no way you will find this type of selection with any other support top. And did we mention the organic cotton option? Oh, yeah, we did. (But we’re going to do it again because we love it!) They have an organic cotton option also!

Now, I have to make a confession.
We have had this PumpEase for a long time. I mean, way past our usual three week turnaround (company changes, crazy people, yadda yadda yadda). I’m not going to make excuses, but what I am going to do is tell you how awesome the owners and representatives of PumpEase really are. They have been patient, informative, and nothing but sincere and great. I can personally attest to the fact that anyone who has the need to speak with them will be met with nothing but understanding and helpful replies.

One more thing about this company before I go:

Snugabell Mom & Baby Gear
is proud to announce that

And I quote emphatically: “Woot woot!!”

  1. Thanks for the great review. Interesting about the mamas with the fast letdown – I’ve never heard of that before. I know some mamas wear the PumpEase all the time, so that could be a solution perhaps!

And with regards to the nursing on one side/pumping on the other. I never did it personally, but I know a lot of our mamas do – some lift or lower the PumpEase on the side they are nursing on, others latch the baby through the opening. This latter one may take practice. I’m imagining you would have to push the opening back with your fingers, or grab some breast tissue and pull it out a bit to latch the baby.

Again, thanks for a new perspective on our product!

    All the best,

    Wendy
